When it comes to party singing games, there really is no competition because Singstar is still pretty much the best. Of course, there will be those of you out there who much prefer singing with Rock Band, Guitar Hero World Tour, Kareoke Revolution, etc. and many of you probably hate these kinds of games period so won’t really be interested in this blog but i find that perfectly fine. I guess I just find these types of games to be a lot of fun, with Singstar on my PS3 having impressed me the most. But like with all things that impress me, I have a tendency to make a wishlist of all the things that I wished would be improved with this franchise. With Singstar series going crazy with all its worthless volume 2s and volume 3s, I just really wanted to write this blog. So here’s what I would love to see happen with Singstar or with any of its competitors.
First off, all the Singstar blu-rays come with 30 songs. Now, let’s stop there and think for a moment. 30? That’s it?! Of course, all these songs are played with really high-quality music video going off in the background but a 25gb disc holding just 30 songs is pitiful. I know Sony’s justification is that there are over 300plus songs to choose from in the online SingStore but it’s $1.50 per song on there and that’s just not cool. The jump from the PS2 to the Ps3 should really mean something and it’s just so disappointing to me when it means nothing in regards to content. Clearly, licensing is not the issue if they were able to get so many songs available on the SingStore. SingStore can be a great downloadable marketplace for new recent songs that gets released while the actual disc can offer the amount of songs a typical Rock Band or Guitar Hero game offers . Just having enough songs on that blu-ray I feel would be enough to get me to buy the next SingStar volume.
But then again, perhaps with the online SingStore working so well, new track packs and new content should just be available for download for cheaper prices, hence making these retail disc versions pointless and worthless. In any case, the more songs that become available to me at a lower price point, whether by including more songs with the next disc release or by online bundles that become released, the better.
What’s more important however is the simple fact that Singstar is still not as streamlined as it can be. Why is it that only my highest score is ever recorded? A table of high scores should easily be accessible not only to me (and that should be a given) but also to the Singstar online community. It’d be awesome to compare high scores. Adding to this, there should be much more customizability with the game’s features. For example, while being able to record my performance with the PS Eye is really neat, there should also be an addition to start and stop recording the performance when I want to, instead of it being so arbitrary. Sony can boast all they want about how none of the competition even includes such a feature but nonetheless, that doesn’t excuse them for not allowing us use this feature to the fullest capacity.
As far as things being streamlined goes, something also needs to be done about song browsing and song selecting. The status quo with Singstar games is that once you finish a song, you’re taken back to the menu screen where you have to choose the next song to play. For solo play, this aspect is nothing to complain about but when I have a group of friends and/or family over, this means that there is unwanted and unneeded wait time between songs. Did Sony just foolishly dismiss the concept of queuing? There really should be an option to select the future songs while singing the current song. This isn’t to say that the menu interface of Singstar is poorly done (it’s still the best in the genre if you ask me) but it still needs a lot of work if it wishes to convince me that I should play Singstar instead of going to a local kareoke place.
The final thing I want to add to my wishlist is interactivity with the songs that are currently playing. Instead of being given the extremely limited option of singing the short or the full version of a song, there should be the full-blown feature to skip verses/choruses, repeat certain parts, or skip the current song to go onto the next song in queue. Sometimes, when you get a party going, we may not feel or dig a particular song. There is absolutely no reason the game should force us to finish that song or that part of the song. This kind of interactivity in any singing game be it Singstar or Karoke Revolution or perhaps even Lips 2 (if there is a sequel to that lol) would be a really welcoming feature.
And lastly, and this only pertains to the Singstar franchise, when are we going to get those wireless mics?
